I going into the North Cascades where a bear can is strongly recommended. That would require some beefing of the hipbelt and possibly some stiffening, which adds weight but it could be kept minimal for a light duty pack. However, it is a bit heavier because of built-in backpanel padding, etc. Its always important to match the pack volume to the volume of your gear kit; a partially full pack does not carry as well as a full one. With an 18.5 inch torso, it certainly sounds like you are a solid Medium. The Kalais has load lifters (the Gorilla doesn't), which will give some adjustment. That said, I prefer to size up too, but you can overdo it. Thanks for keeping up the strong work.

I've been using a ULA circuit for a few years and have been reasonably happy with it, but I seem to be in-between sizes and for most trips its overkill for me. I'm looking for something a bit smaller, and a bit lighter. Your reviews of both the 2012 Gorilla and the Elemental Horizons Kalais were glowing, and as a result I've taken a close look at both packs. If you had to choose just one as a go-to pack, which would you select? I realize fit is a primary concern which I won't be able to discern until they are actually loaded up and on my back, but I'm curious how you'ed stack them up head-to-head. Also, i'm skinny, 6,0" and my torso is 18.5 inches. My waist is 31". I generally prefer to err on the long-side when i buy packs, particularly if there aren't load-lifers. Any advice regarding sizing?

Thanks,

Matt Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06549429936664547998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8864130178222513400.post-31226256347473381602012-09-03T03:54:08.778-06:002012-09-03T03:54:08.778-06:00Excellent review! Do you have any specific thoughts on how a consumer could better beef up the the stay system to transfer weight tot he hipbelt?jedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15137446417326689330noreply@blogger.com
